The Archives and History Commission serves as a citizen advisory board to the Department of Arts, Culture and History. Commission members are appointed by the governor.

Specific activities of the commission include providing guidance to the commissioner and agency directors in the establishment of state plans for the Archives and History Section, the Historic Preservation Section and the Museum Section; approving and distributing grants-in-aid and awards from federal and state funds; encouraging and promoting the purposes of the agency; approving rules concerning the professional policies and functions of the agency; and advising and consenting to the appointment of agency directors by the commissioner. The commission also reviews and approves nominations to the National Register of Historic Places. (WV Code §29-1-5)

The Capitol Building Commission reviews and approves or rejects all plans for substantial physical changes to the grounds and buildings of the State Capitol complex, including the Capitol, the Culture Center, state office buildings and the Governor’s Mansion. The Records Management and Preservation Board was created to establish a system of records management and preservation for county governments, including grants for making records management and preservation uniform throughout the state.
