CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Summer 2018 issue of GOLDENSEAL magazine is now available for purchase at select retailers and/or by calling the GOLDENSEAL office. GOLDENSEAL, West Virginia’s magazine of traditional life since 1975, is published quarterly by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. Attached is a list of retailers where GOLDENSEAL magazine is available.

The cover story is dedicated to Jane George (1922-2018) of Roane County. George inspired generations of 4-Hers to love West Virginia history and helped spark the Mountain State crafts revival of the 1960s.

Other articles cover “Route 60 Saturday Night,” an old-radio-style show in Barboursville; a Morgantown shirt factory that employed hundreds of women for nearly seven decades; the life of a young boy growing up in Madison in the 1960s; Philippi’s “white elephant,” a World War II Hellcat fighter that once stood on the Barbour County Courthouse lawn; Wyoming County native and current Morgantown artist Jamie Lester; descendants who are preserving old family houses and farming traditions in Hardy and Mineral counties; the Pigtown Fling, a 35-year music festival/family reunion in Hampshire County; and Lewis County lawn artist Dan Moody.

The magazine also pays tribute to the latest inductees into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame: Frank Hutchison of Logan County, Hasil Adkins of Boone County, punk rock pioneer Fred “Sonic” Smith from the Lincoln/Logan County area, David and John Morris of Clay County, Ann Magnuson of Charleston and Christian music great Michael W. Smith of Wayne County. Emily Hilliard also shares an excerpt from her foreword to the new edition of Patrick Gainer’s Folk Songs from the West Virginia Hills.

To order the Summer issue for $5.95 plus shipping or purchase a one-year subscription (four quarterly issues) for $20, or if your retail outlet would like to carry the magazine, call the GOLDENSEAL office at 304-558-0220.
