Happy National Historic Marker Day! If you are interested in volunteering to clean a historical marker in your community, here are a few tips to ensure both your safety and that of the historical marker:

  • Wear protective gear such as gloves and protective goggles or glasses!
  • Make sure not to use any harsh chemicals when cleaning a marker. A bucket of water with a little bit of soap, such as Dawn Dish Detergent, will work just fine!
  • Be sure not to use anything too abrasive to clean the marker. Use cleaning materials such as cloth rags, soft bristled non-metal scrub brushes, sponges, and/or a toothbrush. Using anything more abrasive than these items could result in damage to the marker.
  • Bring a step ladder! It can be difficult at times to reach the tops of some markers, so a ladder is super helpful.
  • Having a portable spray washer filled with water can also be handy when trying to wash away soap and any residue cleaned from the marker.
  • Be sure to bring trash bags to dispose of any waste produced while cleaning the marker!

Our historic markers are vital pieces of our communities. They tell of our history, our people, and our communities, and we appreciate those who volunteer their time to assist in keeping these markers looking great. Have a safe and wonderful National Marker Day!
