CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History (WVDACH) unveiled the 2018 Emerging Artists Exhibition at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston, and announced the award winners for the juried exhibition during the opening on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018.
Thirty West Virginia artists were selected for the exhibit, which features 43 pieces, including painting, drawing, mixed media, craft, photography, digital art and sculpture. Sixteen counties are represented in the show.
Three awards were presented for the exhibition. The Best of Show/Purchase Award was presented to Jesse Thornton, Huntington, Cabell County for No Service; second place to Terry Hickernell, Charleston, Kanawha County for Innocence Lost; and third place to Jenny Wilson, Morgantown, Monongalia County for Broke Down Fences. A list of all exhibitors is below.
“We are proud to showcase these amazing West Virginia artists,” said Randall Reid-Smith, WVDACH commissioner. “The arts is very important to our communities and with the emerging artists exhibition and the biennial juried exhibition we want to continue to feature as many artists from the Mountain State as we can.”
The entries and winners were selected by Kim Beck, an artist whose work includes drawing, print, installation and sculpture. Beck grew up in Colorado and now lives in Pittsburgh, Pa., where she is an associate professor in the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University. She has an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and BA from Brandeis University. Her work has been shown widely, including the Walker Art Center, Carnegie Museum of Art, Smack Mellon, Socrates Sculpture Park, Warhol Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Omi Sculpture Park, Hallwalls and on the High Line in NYC.
The exhibit will be on display at the Culture Center in the West Virginia State Museum Commissioner’s Gallery until Feb. 27, 2019.
