CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia 101 is coming to the West Virginia State Museum! This afterschool program will be offered from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays from September through May and feature different West Virginia-themed activities each month for students in grades 2 to 5. The free program is limited to 28 participants per week and advance registration is required. The program is open to students and parents. Each Thursday, the first hour will include activities that introduce students to a topic that relates to West Virginia history. The second hour will be devoted to special projects, homework help and creative learning. The monthly themes cover a variety of topics. Participants may choose the months they are interested in attending. The West Virginia Division of Culture and History is proud to be able to present its programs at no charge to the public but without a solution to the state’s budget situation, this could be the last year that programs of this type could be offered. The division, led by Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith, is an agency within the Office of Secretary of Education and the Arts with Gayle Manchin, cabinet secretary. It brings together the past, present and future through programs and services focusing on archives and history, arts, historic preservation and museums.
