West Virginia Division of Culture and History Recognized Select National Historic Landmarks, Individual Resources and Historic Districts Across the State on Oct. 16

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Culture and History (WVDCH) recognized 15 extant National Historic Landmarks, 50 individual resources and 50 historic districts from across the Mountain State on Sunday, Oct. 16, during a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 at the Culture Center in Charleston. The event also honored Betty Woods “Snookie” Nutting for her exemplary preservation efforts.

There are more than 1,030 National Register listings in West Virginia, according to Susan M. Pierce, deputy state historic preservation officer. “Each is important to telling the stories of our history and heritage. We chose those listings which represent the varied themes of our state’s rich past,” she said.

“When I reflect on each of the projects with which I have been involved in the last 10 years, I most often recall the people with whom we have worked at the State Historic Preservation Office,” said Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith of the WVDCH. “They are passionate about preservation, dedicated to finding solutions that will save rather than destroy historic places, sites and properties, and knowledgeable about the personal stories of our state’s history.”

John DesMeules of Eleanor, Putnam County, and Stan and Vicki Cook of Letart, Mason County, created the special Historic Preservation awards to honor the historic sites, districts and National Historic Landmarks in West Virginia. Matt Thomas of Shock, Gilmer County, designed and handcrafted the Exemplary Service to Historic Preservation award presented to Nutting.
