SUMMARY:Small Town Universe
DESCRIPTION:Small Town Universe shares stories of love\, loss\, resilience\, hope\, scientific discovery\, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence in Green Bank\, WV\, a small town with a big telescope. STU debuted this past April at the 2024 Cleveland International Film Festival in the historic Mimi Theater\, where it won the Global Health Award\, and was part of the Solar Eclipse day events that were made possible by a partnership between CIFF\, the Great Lakes Science Center\, and NASA’s Glenn Research Center. It has since gone on to screen at multiple film festivals\, winning awards and audiences’ hearts across the country and beyond. \n\n\n\nIn addition to featuring the Green Bank Observatory and many people from the surrounding community in the film – including Charleston natives Dr. Karen O’Neil (previous Director of the Green Bank Observatory) and Michael Holstine (former Facility/Project Engineer and Business Manager at the GBO during the filming)\, and local Marshall University Physics graduate student\, Ellie White – Dellamaggiore worked with many talented film production crew members from West Virginia including cinematographer/filmmaker Tijah Bumgarner who is also a Marshall professor and Director of MU’s new Filmmaking Program. \n\n\n\nConversation and Q & A with Director Katie Dellamaggiore\, film subject Ellie White and other guests to follow screening. \n\n\n\nThis event is free. RSVP is highly recommended.

Juilliard trained and drummer on a Grammy® nominated album\, Sammy Miller has been hailed as “the perfect player scholar” (The Wall Street Journal). \n\n\n\nMiller has spent the last decade making jazz accessible to a new generation of listeners and learners. From Lincoln Center to The White House\, TEDx to The Newport Jazz Festival\, with special guests including Jon Batiste and Wynton Marsalis\, Miller’s band\, Sammy Miller and The Congregation\, has headlined the most prominent Jazz festivals for over a decade. The Congregation specializes in joyful jazz–music that feels good. They recently released the album\, Joyful Jazz at Lincoln Center (2023). \n\n\n\nAfter working with over 60\,000 students in 45 states\, Miller launched the music education platform PLAYBOOK (www.thisisplaybook.com) to offer teachers the tools to inspire lifelong musicians. Miller recently discussed his music education philosophy in his New York Times op-ed titled “We’re Teaching Music to Kids All Wrong”.

Join Emily and Betsy Sokolosky of Basecamp Printing Co. for TWO introductory relief printmaking workshops at the Clay Center. Learn the fundamentals of carving a linocut by cutting away negative space to create a raised image. Then\, ink your surface and run it through our press to create your very own limited edition of prints.
