National Register and Architectural Survey historian to share fascinating stories about the Civil War in West Virginia on March 6 at the Culture Center

 News…

Ever wonder how many firsts of the American Civil War occurred in West Virginia? National Register and Architectural Survey Historian Bethany Canfield with the West Virginia Division of Culture and History’s State Historic Preservation Office will answer that question and more on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, as she shares fascinating stories about some of the major Civil War battles in West Virginia.

Canfield, along with Section 106 Review and Compliance Archaeologist Carolyn M. Kender, researched and wrote the text for the 2011 West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office’s calendar titled “The Civil War in West Virginia,” which featured major events of the era and the importance of preserving Civil War resources.

Canfield will discuss how the sites were selected, and share fascinating stories about the resources and additional photographs not included in the calendar.

The free lecture begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center at the State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The public is invited to attend.

Before joining the preservation office in 2009, Canfield earned a bachelor’s degree in history concentrated in public history from Mercyhurst College, and a master’s degree in applied history from Shippensburg University. Her interest in the American Civil War began in the fourth grade. She has toured several battlefields and worked at Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania National Military Park and Gettysburg National Military Park.

On March 6, the library will close at 5 p.m. and reopen at 5:45 p.m. for participants only. For planning purposes, participants are encouraged to register for the workshop, but advance registration is not required to attend. To register in advance, contact Robert Taylor, library manager, by e-mail at bobby.l.taylor@wv.gov or at (304) 558-0230, ext. 163. Participants interested in registering by e-mail should send their name, telephone number and the name and date of the session.
