SUMMARY:Film: The Lost Ones: The Long Journey Home
DESCRIPTION:A documentary film by Susan Rose and Manuel Saralegui \n\n\n\nThis is the story of two Lipan Apache children who were captured along the Texas-Mexican border in 1877 by the 4th U.S. Cavalry after massacring almost everyone in their village. Kasetta and her brother\, Jack\, lived with a military family before being sent to the Carlisle boarding school in Pennsylvania. They then each lived with different families and Kasetta bore a son\, who was sent to the Carlisle school upon her death. The children were never forgotten by their families\, who did not know what had happened to them or where they were buried until two centuries later. In 2009\, Lipan Apache descendants traveled to Carlisle to offer their blessings and send their Lost Ones home.

SUMMARY:Cabin Fever Concert @ Historic Graham House
DESCRIPTION:CABIN FEVER is back! – Saturday\, Feb. 22 @ Graham House\n\nThe second annual Cabin Fever concert at the historic Graham House in Lowell\, WV is right around the corner and promises to be a great show! On Saturday\, February 22nd\, from 3 PM to 5 PM\, three very talented musicians – Tish Westman\, Hunter Walker\, and Lewis Prichard – will join Appalachian duo Little Maggie to present a mix of traditional and original songs and tunes featuring a passel of instruments from clawhammer banjo to upright bass\, fiddle to bowed psaltery\, lap dulcimer to ukelele\, mandolin to autoharp and more\, in combinations perhaps never before heard.\n\nFor Tish Westman music is a way of life. As a youngster\, she often found herself in trouble for whistling and humming at school. She now teaches\, performs\, sings\, and composes on a variety of instruments\, most notably lap dulcimer and bowed psaltery. Since 2001\, she and her husband Greg have been the resident woodworkers at Tamarack where they build and sell instruments along with recordings and books of music instruction in their Noted Note style. In addition\, they produce an annual Bowed Psaltery Symphony performance featuring as many as 60 musicians from across the United States. Among all these pursuits\, Westman says her greatest passion is teaching others to play and watching them experience the joy of music. In 2011\, she performed on Mountain Stage with her group Psaltrio\, which included a budding young musician named Hunter Walker.\n\nWalker began learning dulcimer from Westman when he was 13 years old. A quick learner\, he started competing and went on to win numerous competitions including the West Virginia State Championship. But he didn’t stop there! His prodigious skill on clawhammer banjo landed him more first-place wins including another state title. To hear him play is to appreciate why. He’s an in-demand musician with extensive performance experience\, a composer\, a teacher known for his kind\, approachable style\, a founding member of Long Point String Band\, and a West Virginia native proud of his roots.\n\nLewis Prichard\, also from West Virginia\, grew up in a musical family and began playing guitar at an early age. He took up mandolin as a teen and fiddle in his twenties. Skilled in a variety of genres from Old-Time to Celtic\, his instrumental versatility and easy demeanor make him a welcome addition to many ensembles. Past adventures include taking his music as far away as Norway and playing in Virginia’s Mando Mafia. He is currently a member of Beckley\, West Virginia’s Long Point String Band and Greenhouse of Lexington\, Virginia.\n\nRounding out this unique collaboration will be Mary Dailey and Cheryl Mansley of Little Maggie with songs old and new – heartfelt\, humorous\, and haunting – as well as instrumental accompaniment on some ordinary and not-so-ordinary instruments. As hosts of a monthly Old-Time Mountain Music Jam\, Dailey and Mansley love fostering community participation in the living tradition of Appalachian music. This year’s Cabin Fever concert is dedicated to that tradition and will celebrate the tunes and songs\, musicians and instruments\, and listeners – all part of what makes it so grand.\n\nThe Graham House is located at 131 Graham House Road in Lowell\, West Virginia\, off Rt. 12 (also Rt. 3)\, between Talcott & Pence Springs. Admission is $20/person at the door. Cash only\, please. Doors open at 2:15 PM\, and seating is first come\, first served.\nIn case of inclement weather\, the concert will take place the next day\, Sunday\, February 23rd. For more information contact Cheryl Mansley at 304-702-0554 or cherylmansley@gmail.com\, or visit ArtBeat of the Mountains on Facebook.\n\nWe would like to thank Graham House\, the New River Gateway CVB\, and the Hinton Area Foundation for their support in making this event possible. We look forward to seeing you at this one-of-a-kind show that’s sure to cure even the most serious case of cabin fever!

SUMMARY:Virtual Program: Affrilachian Freedom Dreaming: Honoring Dr. Ancella Bickley
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Women’s History Month\, on March 28\, West Virginia University Libraries’ Art in the Libraries will host the first Feminist Activist Artist in Residence Catron Booker for a virtual presentation and viewing of her forthcoming project\, “Affrilachian Freedom Dreaming: Honoring Dr. Ancella Bickley.”\n\n\n\nBooker’s project\, a short film that explores Black resistance through the Dr. Ancella Bickley archives of the West Virginia & Regional History Center’s (WVRHC) West Virginia Feminist Activist Collection (FAC)\, will be the result of the inaugural West Virginia Feminist Activist Collection Artist in Residency (FAIR) program.\n\nAs a Black feminist experimental filmmaker and performance artist\, Booker incorporates Afrofuturism to envision Black liberation.\n\n“The Art in the Libraries committee and the West Virginia & Regional History Center were honored to receive over 50 outstanding submissions for the inaugural Feminist Activist Artist in Residence program\,” Art in the Libraries Curator Sally Brown said. “It was a privilege to select Catron Booker\, whose Affrilachian perspective and deeply thoughtful feminist approach align powerfully with the mission of this residency. We are thrilled to support this groundbreaking project and look forward to the powerful dialogue it will spark around the Feminist Activist Collection.”\n\nAs the culmination of the week-long collaborative pilot residency program\, Booker will discuss her experience as the first FAIR resident\, her process and inspiration for exploring the Dr. Ancella Bickley archives and her resulting artistic product to be created during her residency at the virtual event.\n\nOpen to students\, faculty\, staff and the public\, all those interested must  RSVP to receive zoom information to join us on Friday\, March 28 at 10 a.m.  \n\n \n\n\nRSVP for Event\n\n\n \n\n\nCatron Booker. \nA short experimental film\, Booker’s project intends to honor Bickley’s legacy. A Huntington\, W.Va. native born in 1930\, Bickley is a historian\, educator and author known for preserving and documenting the history of Black communities in West Virginia. Her work emphasized oral histories\, genealogy and the contributions of overlooked Black scholars and activists.\n\nInspired by Bickley’s focus on overlooked “community builders\,” Booker will interweave archival materials with footage of the Ohio River\, a historically significant landmark in Louisville. The project will examine the river as both a visual metaphor and a site of historical continuity. As part of the residency\, Booker’s virtual film screening and community discussion will engage conversation on Bickley’s impact and legacy.\n\nBooker was selected as the 2025 resident for the inaugural FAIR program by the WVU Art in the Libraries Committee in collaboration with WVRHC archivists.\n\nFor more information about Art in the Libraries or FAIR\, visit  exhibits.lib.wvu.edu. To register for the virtual event\, visit  wvu.libcal.com/calendar/events/FAIR.\n\nAbout the West Virginia Feminist Activist Collection Artist in Residency \n\nThe  Art in the Libraries program and the  West Virginia & Regional History Center (WVRHC) at  WVU Libraries launched the inaugural  West Virginia Feminist Activist Collection Artist in Residency (FAIR) to expand the connections between the WVRHC’s  West Virginia Feminist Activist Collection (FAC) and the public.\n\nThis collaborative pilot residency program aims to expand the use of and build upon the archival collection by offering awards to support projects that use the collection in new and creative ways. FAIR supports artists in the creation of artistic works\, small exhibitions\, publications or other creations that imaginatively study\, experiment with and/or build upon the collection materials.\n\n \n\n-WVU Libraries-  \n\nMEDIA CONTACT: Ellis Willard\n\nDirector of Public Relations & Events\n\nWVU Libraries\n\n304-293-0306;  ellis.willard@mail.wvu.edu
