DESCRIPTION:WHEELING\, W.Va. – West Virginia Independence Hall (WVIH) in Wheeling will host a morning coffee social on Saturday\, Oct. 15\, at the historic McLure House Hotel from 9 – 11 a.m.\, followed by a debate over West Virginia statehood between Abraham Lincoln\, portrayed by John King\, and Andrew Johnson\, portrayed by Kevin Titus\, in the courtroom of WVIH at 11:30 a.m. Reservations are required for this free event by calling WVIH. The deadline to reserve a spot is Thursday\, Oct. 6.

SUMMARY:Katherine Johnson Weekend
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the life and achievements of NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson\, the Greenbrier Historical Society will be hosting a weekend of community activities aimed at recognizing her life and legacy and inspiring the next generation of scientists and thinkers. These events will take place at the Schoolhouse Hotel in White Sulphur Springs the weekend of August 26th\, which would be her 104th birthday and West Virginia’s designated Katherine Johnson Day.​Born in White Sulphur Springs\, Katherine Coleman Johnson was one of the first Black female engineers at NASA and her pioneering work on John Glenn’s orbital mission in 1962 consolidated her reputation as an outstanding mathematician. Her life and story has earned her countless awards and recognitions\, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016\, and has inspired works such as the book & movie Hidden Figures.

DESCRIPTION:By William Reynolds\, Historian and Exhibit Specialist\, Campus Martius Museum\, Marietta\, OH \nThis program looks at some of the first reports on earthworks in the Ohio Valley\, including the Grave Creek Mound. Early maps and descriptions of mounds and other prehistoric earthworks can provide a more complete picture of  these ancient structures than is visible from what remains of them today.
