SUMMARY:ArtsLink Coffeehouse featuring the Bank Notes with Bill Stokes Magic
DESCRIPTION:ArtsLink’s 2024 Coffeehouse Series will continue Tuesday\, August 20\, with The Bank Notes. The free 6:30pm concert\, sponsored by First Mutual Bank\, will be held on the performance deck at the Francis Creative Arts Center at the corner of Maple Avenue and Washington Street in downtown New Martinsville. Photography by local artist Jane Knight will be on display in the gallery. The Bank Notes are a local Barbershop chorus whose repertoire includes classic Barbershop tunes\, and some modern songs performed in the Barbershop style. Their name is derived from their rehearsal location\, Doolin Center\, which used to be a bank. In between sets\, we have Bill Stokes\, a local entertainer who will share some musical trickery of his own.  Light refreshments will be served and don’t forget a lawn chair. In the event of an uncooperative weatherman\, the concert will be moved indoors.

SUMMARY:"Winnie-the-Pooh" Theatre for Young Audiences
DESCRIPTION:The Capital High School Theatre is proud to present the world premier of a new Appalachian adaptation of Winnie-the-Pooh.\n\nShows are Friday\, October 4th and Saturday\, October 5th at 7pm and Sunday\, October 6th at 2pm. The show runs approximately 35 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at the door- $5 for students\, $10 for adults. CASH ONLY\n\nIn these quirky tales\, Grandpa paints the picture of Winnie-the-Pooh\, a bear of very little brain\, and his friends to Christopher Robin before bedtime. These stories often begin with a simple problem (and with Pooh\, that problem more often than not involves honey). Then\, the friends of the Wood\, along with Christopher Robin\, must come together to find a solution. Whether it is using their imagination to create a new invention\, using teamwork to build a house\, or sharing resources to make a new friend feel welcome\, the wacky personalities of the Wood’s inhabitants constantly butt heads to reach a collective goal while learning important life lessons along the way.

SUMMARY:Almost\, MAINE
DESCRIPTION:A woman carries her heart\, broken into nineteen pieces\, in a small paper bag. A man shrinks to half his former size\, after losing hope in love. A couple keep the love they have given each other in large red bags\, or compress the mass into the size of a diamond. These playful and surreal experiences are commonplace in the world of John Cariani’s Almost\, Maine\, where on one deeply cold and magical Midwinter Night\, the citizens of Almost — not organized enough for a town\, too populated for a wilderness — experience the life-altering power of the human heart. Relationships end\, begin\, or change beyond recognition\, as strangers become friends\, friends become lovers\, and lovers turn into strangers. Propelled by the mystical energy of the aurora borealis and populated with characters who are humorous\, plain-spoken\, thoughtful\, and sincere\, Almost\, Maine is a series of loosely connected tales about love\, each with a compelling couple at its center\, each with its own touch of sorcery.

SUMMARY:Cabin Fever Concert @ Historic Graham House
DESCRIPTION:CABIN FEVER is back! – Saturday\, Feb. 22 @ Graham House\n\nThe second annual Cabin Fever concert at the historic Graham House in Lowell\, WV is right around the corner and promises to be a great show! On Saturday\, February 22nd\, from 3 PM to 5 PM\, three very talented musicians – Tish Westman\, Hunter Walker\, and Lewis Prichard – will join Appalachian duo Little Maggie to present a mix of traditional and original songs and tunes featuring a passel of instruments from clawhammer banjo to upright bass\, fiddle to bowed psaltery\, lap dulcimer to ukelele\, mandolin to autoharp and more\, in combinations perhaps never before heard.\n\nFor Tish Westman music is a way of life. As a youngster\, she often found herself in trouble for whistling and humming at school. She now teaches\, performs\, sings\, and composes on a variety of instruments\, most notably lap dulcimer and bowed psaltery. Since 2001\, she and her husband Greg have been the resident woodworkers at Tamarack where they build and sell instruments along with recordings and books of music instruction in their Noted Note style. In addition\, they produce an annual Bowed Psaltery Symphony performance featuring as many as 60 musicians from across the United States. Among all these pursuits\, Westman says her greatest passion is teaching others to play and watching them experience the joy of music. In 2011\, she performed on Mountain Stage with her group Psaltrio\, which included a budding young musician named Hunter Walker.\n\nWalker began learning dulcimer from Westman when he was 13 years old. A quick learner\, he started competing and went on to win numerous competitions including the West Virginia State Championship. But he didn’t stop there! His prodigious skill on clawhammer banjo landed him more first-place wins including another state title. To hear him play is to appreciate why. He’s an in-demand musician with extensive performance experience\, a composer\, a teacher known for his kind\, approachable style\, a founding member of Long Point String Band\, and a West Virginia native proud of his roots.\n\nLewis Prichard\, also from West Virginia\, grew up in a musical family and began playing guitar at an early age. He took up mandolin as a teen and fiddle in his twenties. Skilled in a variety of genres from Old-Time to Celtic\, his instrumental versatility and easy demeanor make him a welcome addition to many ensembles. Past adventures include taking his music as far away as Norway and playing in Virginia’s Mando Mafia. He is currently a member of Beckley\, West Virginia’s Long Point String Band and Greenhouse of Lexington\, Virginia.\n\nRounding out this unique collaboration will be Mary Dailey and Cheryl Mansley of Little Maggie with songs old and new – heartfelt\, humorous\, and haunting – as well as instrumental accompaniment on some ordinary and not-so-ordinary instruments. As hosts of a monthly Old-Time Mountain Music Jam\, Dailey and Mansley love fostering community participation in the living tradition of Appalachian music. This year’s Cabin Fever concert is dedicated to that tradition and will celebrate the tunes and songs\, musicians and instruments\, and listeners – all part of what makes it so grand.\n\nThe Graham House is located at 131 Graham House Road in Lowell\, West Virginia\, off Rt. 12 (also Rt. 3)\, between Talcott & Pence Springs. Admission is $20/person at the door. Cash only\, please. Doors open at 2:15 PM\, and seating is first come\, first served.\nIn case of inclement weather\, the concert will take place the next day\, Sunday\, February 23rd. For more information contact Cheryl Mansley at 304-702-0554 or cherylmansley@gmail.com\, or visit ArtBeat of the Mountains on Facebook.\n\nWe would like to thank Graham House\, the New River Gateway CVB\, and the Hinton Area Foundation for their support in making this event possible. We look forward to seeing you at this one-of-a-kind show that’s sure to cure even the most serious case of cabin fever!

SUMMARY:Sweet on You: The Art of the Mountain Maple
DESCRIPTION:From the misty mountains to the sugar shacks\, maple has flowed through West Virginia’s cultural veins for generations. West Virginia is home to one of the largest concentrations of Maple trees in the country and folks have been tapping trees for centuries\, capturing the sweet water from the Maple and creating the delectable maple syrup. South Side Studios and Future Generations University are proud to partner on an art show during Maple Days to raise awareness of this industry which contributes so much to our region’s heritage: Sweet on You: The Art Of Mountain Maple. This exhibition celebrates this living legacy through the eyes of regional artists who capture unique aspects of our state’s maple tradition\, bringing together paintings\, photographs\, and mixed media works as well as historical information\, all that celebrate Maple Days 2025.\n\nThe exhibition will run from February 21 – April 18\, 2025.
