Edward Hargro to Present “African American Life: A Personal Perspective” in the Archives and History Library on June 28

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Edward Hargro, the son of a Tuskegee Airman, will present “African American Life: A Personal Perspective” in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston on Thursday, June 28, 2018. The program, the second of the 2018 Block Speaker Series, will begin at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Hargro attended Bluefield State College, where he received a bachelor of science degree in physical education and biology. He also played and lettered in football. In 1967, Hargro achieved the rank of lieutenant in the United States Army in Officers Candidate School, and he later served six years in the West Virginia National Guard.

Hargro taught biology at Triadelphia High School from 1967 to 1972, during which time he also served as an assistant football coach and was a member of Big Brothers of Wheeling. After teaching, Hargro became a pharmaceutical sales representative with Ayers Laboratories until 1982 and then with Glaxo Smith Kline Pharmaceuticals  until 2008.

“The Block” was once considered the heart of Charleston’s black community. It is comprised of a 25-acre area bounded by Washington Street East, Capitol Street, Smith Street and Sentz Court.

Patrons may park behind the Culture Center after 5 p.m. on June 28 and enter the building at the back loading dock area. The bus turnaround is open, and handicapped spots are available there. Visitors parking there should enter at the front of the building.
