CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History’s (WVDACH) annual exhibition, Quilts and Wall Hangings 2020, is now on display in the Great Hall of the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex. The Culture Center is currently open to visitors Tuesday – Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the exhibition is free to the public.
This year, the popular juried exhibition features 58 creative quilts and wall hangings representing the talents of West Virginians from 19 counties. There are 36 quilts and 22 wall hangings in the exhibition, which will remain on display until Oct. 2, 2020.
Quilt making is one of West Virginia’s oldest and most treasured art forms,” said Charles Morris, museums director. “This annual display is a favorite for many West Virginians and for quilters and quilt lovers from around the country. It is one of our most popular displays.
The exhibition features the work of 45 quilters. Winners were selected by Linda McCuean, a professional longarm quilter, teacher, lecturer and quilt maker. She began making quilts in 1978 as a hand quilter, began longarm quilting in 1998, and in 2004 became a Certified Quilt Judge with the National Quilting Association. McCuean’s work has been published in numerous books, magazines and calendars.
Quilt awards are $750 for first place, $400 for second place and $300 for third place. The wall hanging awards are $400 for first place, $300 for second place and $200 for third place. The department made two purchase awards, one each for quilts and wall hangings, and the juror designated a Best of Show prize of $100. In addition, eight nonmonetary honorable mention distinctions were made.
First place winners in this year’s exhibition include Marie Miley of Huntington, Cabell County, for Rose Sampler in the Applique Quilt category and Best of Show; Deborah Curtis of Elkins, Randolph County, for Nocturnal Gaze in the Mixed/Other Quilt category; Carolyn Bucklin Mullins of Daniels, Raleigh County, for Pineapple Crazy in the Pieced category, and Linda Vaughan of Caldwell, Greenbrier County, for A Simple Country Sampler in the Wall Hanging category.
The Culture Center is following guidelines in accordance with best practices from the WV DHHR and CDC. All visitors are encouraged to wear a face covering and will have their temperature taken upon entry. All visitors will also be asked to fill out the West Virginia State Visitor Covid-19 Screening Form. Visitors should follow social distancing guidelines at all times.
