WV State Museum Education Department

How can we relate historic perspective to someone who communicates in “real time” and measures change in seconds instead of centuries? We look to Socrates, “I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think.” And there, our journey begins.

In a team effort with educators and historians, we have created personal experiences in the museum with the stories that illustrate what became and is the 35th state. The curious and the dreamers of all ages come to experience the immersive sights and sounds that place each individual “in the moment.” For the young learners who are eager to know “what’s next?” We want them to discover that we need to know where we’ve been in order to know where we are going, and that they have a critical role to play in that mission.

The State Museum’s educational programs support the West Virginia Department of Education’s (WVDE) vision of high standards and preparedness for higher learning. Programs meet West Virginia school’s 21st century content standards and objectives for learning that target all grade levels while combining multiple disciplines. These carefully designed experiences are formatted to include activities that incorporate research, peer-to-peer cooperative learning, investigation and reflection, and much more to strengthen higher-order thinking skills and analytical proficiency.

Our Education Department has orientation materials, activities, and more to make the most of your visit. Be sure to check out some of the key online resources to further enhance your West Virginia Arts, Culture and History studies.
